All you need is online love

Online dating has come a long way since its inception; no longer do people hang their heads in shame at the ignominy of having to reply to the question ‘So where did you two meet?’ with a shamefully whispered ‘We found each other online’. Approval and nonchalance have replaced the previously felt embarrassment, as people recognise the value – both in time and quality – of either meeting their prospective partners online or dating virtually.

Time has become a commodity, with many choosing to focus on their careers and leaving settling down until their later years. However, with the rise in chasing personal aspirations, there has been a downturn in people having the time to date, much less the opportunity to go out and find ‘the right’ person.

Enter the 21st century, and the boom in the online world of dating. With around 140 lifestyle and dating sites in the UK, nearly 900 in the US and a growing number worldwide, the virtual world has opened up a global bank of online singletons looking for love.

Quoted as being the most significant change in dating tradition, the way people interact with one another has fundamentally shifted. Entrepreneurs have caught onto this and online dating now commands high figures, both in monetary terms and numbers of applicants. Indeed, research has predicted that by 2011, revenue from European online users would double to 549 million euros. Coupled with technological advances – including mobile phones, web casts and free networking sites – people now have the tools to find ‘the one’ at the click of a button.

A 2007 survey identified that in the UK alone, 7.8 million people use some form of online dating service; up from 5.4 million in 2005. Nearly a third of British singles believe that it is a great way to find a partner, whilst 53% said they intended to use online dating in the future.

The popularity of online dating has been further illustrated through popular culture and especially in films. Numerous films, such as You’ve Got Mail, Napoleon Dynamite and Because I Said So, have reflected the shift in people’s attitudes towards online dating. Wired Magazine has predicted that online dating will become essential to finding a partner in the future, especially since it introduces an efficient method of sifting through a catalogue of undesirables to find the desirable.

Many factors have contributed to the explosion in digital dating, but whatever the reason, one thing is for certain: the days of furtively raking through the back pages of newspapers in order to read the personal adverts have been firmly placed in the past.
