Bonsai Care - Take Proper Care of Your Indoor Bonsai

Bonsai care is very important. With proper care your bonsai will remain healthy, beautiful and miniature for many years. Since your bonsai is a miniature tree, it will increase in beauty as it matures through the years. Below I’m just listing the basics of bonsai care so I recommend you purchase a book dedicated to the subject to get your bonsai looking as healthy and beautiful as possible.

Location, location, location - In the summer, when the nightly temperature doesn’t dip below 40 your bonsai should be outside; maybe on a patio, balcony or terrace. When it’s outside it should be positioned where it will receive enough sun - morning sun and afternoon shade is optimal. In the winter when the temperatures are low it’s time to bring that indoor bonsai back inside. This should be done gradually over a period of a few weeks. In for a few hours the first time and slowly increase the time it spends indoors until it safely adapts to its new environment.

Hydration - Never neglect water your bonsai. Whenever the soil appears dry add water, never let the soil be completely dry. If your bonsai is constantly in the sun, watering once a day may be required. The overall schedule of things will vary on the size, pot, type of soil and type of bonsai tree. Keep a mental note and evaluate all your bonsai tree’s water requirements and adjust your schedule accordingly. When watering it should be done with a watering can or a hose attachment shoots the water out in a soft manner; you don’t want to disturb the soil. Water should be applied until it starts running out of the holes in the bottom of the pot you are using.

Trimming - Trimming is necessary to keep your tree miniature. Trim back the new growth to the farthest safe point but all of the new growth should not be removed. A moderate amount should be left to keep the health of the tree optimal. Since different trees grow at different rates you’ll have to take a mental note on the rate of your tree’s growth and adjust your trimming accordingly.
